The benefits of Reflexology
- Reflexology is believed to be beneficial for circulation, digestion, and respiratory problems
- Sinus sufferers maintain that it offers instant relief from congestion
- It can also have a dramatic impact on stress levels as well as helping to restore hormonal imbalances. Stress is now believed to be a major cause of physical illness so by reducing tension and improving blood and nerve supply, this alternative therapy can contribute to better overall health
WHAT IS REFLEXOLOGY?
Like so many other natural healing arts, Reflexology originated in Asia, although has been practiced worldwide for centuries. Reflexology as we know it today began in the early years of the twentieth century by Dr.William Fitzgerald. He developed the zone theory of the human body, and discovered that pressure applied in one part of the body could anesthetize another.
In the 1930''s it was discovered that applying pressure on the various parts of the foot had therapeutic effects on corresponding parts of the body, the entire body was mapped onto the feet in other words all organs, glands and skeletal system could be accessed through the feet.
Reflexology has many of the same benefits as body massage with the additional benefit of being a less intrusive treatment, as the treatment is carried out upon the feet alone.
WHAT CAN IT TREAT?
During a Reflexology treatment, endorphins are released into the bloodstream, easing aches and pains, promoting a feeling of deep relaxation and balance in those treated.
Reflexology helps restore and maintain the bodies'' natural equilibrium and encourages the body to work naturally to restore its own healthy balance. Reflexology has been shown to be effective for:
- Back Pain
- Migraine headaches
- Sleep disorders
- Hormonal imbalances
- Sports injuries
- Digestive disorders
- Stress-related conditions
In children it can be used for bed-wetting, constipation, hyper-activity children, teething (for babies), re-occurring infections, poor feeding sessions (for babies), headaches & Ear aches, weight problems (obesity) in children, asthma & hay fever, coughs, colds and respiratory complaints, colic, skin complaints (eczema, acne & dermatitis).

WHAT HAPPENS IN A TREATMENT?
There is an initial medical consultation to check the person''s health and make sure there are no contra-indications to the treatment. The client will be asked to remove their shoes and socks and will lie comfortably on the massage table. The therapist will then perform the treatment which can last between 45-60 minutes. Some particular areas / points on the feet will be massaged and stimulated. At the end of the treatment the therapist will offer advice on nutrition, lifestyle and exercise and will explain any future treatments if necessary.
