The benefits of Physical Therapy Physical Therapy is a hands-on, drug-free healthcare treating the cause of the problem, eliminating the symptoms and restoring balance to the muscles, supporting connective tissue and joints of the body, thus creating structural changes that help the client return to pain-free activities of daily living. What is Physical Therapy?It is concerned with identifying the underlying factors which cause pain and affect movement and function within the body's musculoskeletal system and it intervenes using hands-on techniques to alleviate pain; to maintain, improve, or restore function; to prevent dysfunction and to maintain health. WHAT CAN IT TREAT?Physical therapy is particularly suited to sports persons at all levels in injury prevention and treatment as part of performance enhancement and training. Physical Therapy through its whole-body assessment approach, establishes the underlying cause of the musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. WHAT HAPPENS DURING A TREATMENT? During your first visit, a thorough case history is taken and a detailed physical examination and assessment of the musculoskeletal system are carried out, utilising a wealth of scientific assessment techniques. Following a detailed analysis of the findings and in consultation with you, a treatment plan is designed specifically to meet your needs. With informed consent, treatment commences and incorporates a skilful integration of a wide variety of soft tissue and articular therapeutic techniques appropriate to you and your condition. Time is spent helping you to understand how the condition evolved / occurred, discussing advice and guidance as to how you should manage your condition and prevent recurrence. Subsequent visits will include an evaluation of the treatment progress and where necessary, alteration of the treatment as a result of the evaluation made. Examination findings, proposed treatment plan and modifications to treatment are discussed with the client at all times. A home care programme is a vital element in Physical Therapy. The therapist works in collaboration to help you achieve the agreed goals and objectives in your treatment plan. Your home care regime may include a number of elements depending on your case; such as rest from aggravating factors, and the application of therapeutic interventions if appropriate, such as heat / ice. It may also include an exercises programme, (elements of which include strengthening, stretching and stabilisation) specifically designed to meet your individual needs so as to speed recovery and prevent recurrence. These exercises are shown in clinic and are monitored carefully for the duration of your treatment course. Changes to your occupational, sporting, leisure activities and your posture may be advised.
