The benefits of Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage, has continued to increase in popularity, due in part to its ability to release an enormous amount of tension in a world where tension reigns on every corner.

In many cases, a deep tissue massage has replaced the classic Swedish massage in terms of frequency of use. Whereas visitors to any spa around the country may have traditionally sought out a massage that simply relaxed, now they are seeking a massage that also stimulates, conditions, and heals.

WHAT IS DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE?

Deep tissue massage is effective because of its technique - consisting of slower, stronger massage that stimulates deep into muscles. It aims to release the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the contracted areas, either following or going across the fiber's of the muscles, tendons and fascia.

When muscles are stressed, they block oxygen and nutrients, leading to inflammation that builds up toxins in the muscle tissue. A deep-tissue massage helps loosen muscle tissues, release toxins from muscles and get blood and oxygen circulating properly.

WHAT CAN IT TREAT?

Deep Tissue massage can be especially helpful for athletes who expose their muscles to daily, intensive conditioning. This type of massage will noticeably loosen muscles, alleviate pain, and increase mobility - all significant benefits for an athlete. However, you don't have to be an athlete to enjoy the benefits of deep tissue massage. Those suffering from certain conditions may also find deep tissue massage to be quite therapeutic. Sufferers of chronic pain, fibromyalgia, edema, muscle cramping, pain after a car accident, and even carpal tunnel syndrome may find significant relief from deep tissue massage.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE?

You may have been referred by a doctor or other specialist for a deep tissue massage. Generally speaking, deep tissue massage is recommended for specific problems, so you may know what to expect already. If you have decided to have this massage treatment yourself, you need to make sure that you give the therapist as much information as you can.

The therapist will carry out a full and confidential consultation with you about any medical problems you have, so they know how best to help you.

Depending on how you feel and the therapist or treatment centre you go to, you will either need to wear loose-fitting comfortable clothes or just a towel. Oils may be used, but they are unlikely to be aromatherapy oils. This is not a massage where you expect soft lighting and music either.

The length of a deep-tissue massage session or course will vary depending on what you need. A session is unlikely to last more than an hour, and you may need a course of treatments but this will depend on your condition and will be discussed with you by your therapist.

Hot tip!

Go for a sauna or steam bath before and/or after your massage as this will soothe and warm the muscles and boost the effectiveness of the treatment.
