The Bowen Technique

gentle subtle effective pain-relief hands-on tension release aches and pains relieve stress reset self-healing ability frozen shoulder injuries

The Bowen Technique is unique in the field of bodywork. It’s relatively few, gentle "moves" over muscle and other soft tissue address the whole body, stimulating it to reset and heal itself.

The benefits of the Bowen Technique

  • The Bowen Technique is a gentle, subtle and relaxing hands-on treatment;
  • Quite simply one of the most straight-forward and effective hands-on therapies available;
  • Highly effective remedial therapy complimentary to a wide range of conditions;
  • Most of the work can be performed through light clothing (or directly onto the skin);
  • No hard tissue manipulation involved;
  • No massaging or use of oils;

WHAT IS THE BOWEN TECHNIQUE?

The technique consists of a series of precise rolling type moves across muscle, tendon and connective tissue. The work is very subtle, relaxing and gentle involving no hard or prolonged pressure. It does so holistically, by using the body's innate healing mechanisms. The practitioner delivers signals to the nervous system at specific locations and the body does the rest through the unique feature of a series of short breaks between moves, where the patient is left resting to allow their own body to respond to the gentle moves that have been made. This rest period is important and gives the body time to make the subtle and fine adjustments which help to re-balance the body relieving tension and reducing pain.

Bowen technique should not be mixed with other treatments

A fairly strong rule of Bowen is that it should not be mixed with other therapies. The beneficial results of the treatment work long after the treatment itself and can be negated by other physical treatments eg. massage.

WHAT CAN IT TREAT?

The Bowen Technique aims to balance the whole person and not just the symptoms. Common presentations include back and neck pain, sciatica, tilted pelvis, joint pain, hamstring strain, asthma, hayfever, IBS, PMT, infant colic, whiplash, strokes, knee problems, sports injuries, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow and respiratory problems, to name a few! Practically any problem can potentially be addressed and many people use Bowen as a means of stress management and health maintenance.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM THE BOWEN TECHNIQUE?

The Bowen Technique is suitable for adults and children, including newborn babies and the elderly. There is no deep or prolonged pressure, no high velocity movements or hard tissue manipulation involved.

WHAT HAPPENS IN A TREAMTENT?

During a session the client will lie on a massage bed. You should allow an hour for your first appointment and consultation. Following your first treatment/consultation treatment times will depend on the individual from approx 30 – 45 minutes. Three to four treatments at weekly intervals are often sufficient to achieve long-lasting relief, although further treatments may be required depending on the severity of the complaint.
