WHAT IS MODERN BELLY DANCE?

The term "Belly dance" is a misnomer as all parts of the body are involved in the dance. Belly Dance has been quite popular in the west for a long time with many teachers teaching Egyptian, Lebanese or Turkish style.

As the dance has became more popular in the west it has evolved away from these traditional types of dance into a more relevant and accessible style.

It is a fusion of all dance brought together with an undercurrent of belly dance.

The main goal in bellydance is to be able to separate muscle groups so that one part of your body can move independently from another part of the body so as to create a one person kaleidoscope of movement!  Hip hop, contemporary and flamenco can be seen in many movements, but the overall look is a strong base in traditional belly dance.

Modern Bellydance (sometimes referred to as tribal fusion belly dance) is therefore an evolving dance form which is exciting because it means that even a novice can change the course of the style, or create their own unique style.
Rarely in learning a dance form does one get a chance to do this.

Creativity and self expression are encouraged, further pushing the boundaries of the dance and of one’s own imagination.
it is a wonderful way to feel happy in yourself, more confident and of course is a fun and exciting way to keep fit!

WHAT HAPPENS IN A CLASS

Lots of fun!! But the classes focus on...

  1. muscle control and strengthening

  2. movements and techniques

  3. improvisation and how to construct a choreography.

  4. dance confidence/stage presence/self expression techniques.

Anyone of any age or gender can do belly dance. As it is a fusion, it can be interpreted any way you like.  Our Bellydance teachers encourage people to take it at their own pace and push it as far as they feel comfortable.

Everyone’s bodies are different and unique . We encourage students to become aware of their bodies. This leads to a deeper understanding of one’s  internal structure which is unique to everyone.
