Recognising the Importance of Recognising Stress

One of the most challenging aspects of managing stress is recognising that you are suffering from stress or anxiety in the first place. With the help of a trained and competent professional therapist stress and anxiety can be managed relatively easily.

However many people who suffer from stress or anxiety do not seek that help until the it has become a more substantial problem. Severe stress or anxiety can ultimately antagonise health conditions such as high blood pressure or IBS or even manifest in skin conditions such as hives. It can also lead to depression or panic attacks.

Even before these more severe developments occur, stress and anxiety can have a deleterious effect on your life. Anxiety may prevent you from participating in social events, missing out on work opportunities or companionship which can further exasperate anxiety. Stress can make it more difficult to stay organised at work or keep on top of things in the home. Relationships can also be negatively affected.

Getting prompt and adequate treatment for stress is therefore vitally important. However, many people find it hard to recognise the symptoms, feel they should just be able to “get on with it” or don’t think they are the type of person who gets stressed out. In reality, stress is a normal consequence of living in the modern world and therapy is a normal effective means of managing that stress.

Some of the physical symptoms of Stress include the following.

 - Insomnia or difficulty sleeping

 - Muscle tension

 - Profuse sweating

 - Shortness of breath

 - Rapid heartbeat or pounding heart

 - Upset stomach or stomach tension

There are also a number of emotional symptoms that you should look out for

 - Restlessness

 - Anticipating situations with dread or intense apprehension

 - Difficulty in staying focused

 - Irritability

These are just some of the symptoms you may experience but ultimately recognising when you are suffering from stress or anxiety requires a degree of honest self appraisal and acknowledging the limits of you capabilities. We all enjoy to be challenged by our work and in our personal lives. Meeting these challenges provides us with a sense of deep satisfaction. But very often we can push ourselves far beyond our capabilities without realising it.

Simply talking to a therapist can help to put our capabilities in perspective and see how to better manage our responsibilities along with our stress.
