Bringing harmony to body, mind and spirit with Hawaiian Lomi Lomi Massage

Author: Eva Lennox

8th May 2014

Lomi Lomi is characterised by continuous long, flowing, sweeping strokes that are reminiscent of the ebb and flow of ocean waves. It works gently yet deeply into the muscles enabling the recipient to relax, surrender and simply be. The practitioner focuses deeply and completely on the client with the intention of sharing Aloha spirit using loving hands and a loving heart, honouring the receiver’s body as if it is their own.
Hawaiians understand things in terms of energy flow. When harmony is lacking between mind, body and spirit through belief, idea or action the effect is a state of tension. This tension creates a block in the flow of life force energy, or mana, and these beliefs, patterns and behaviours are then stored in the cells of the body. The flowing strokes of Lomi Lomi massage combined with the focused intention of the practitioner assists the client in relaxing fully so that this energy is shifted thereby allowing the release of those old beliefs, patterns and behaviours whilst giving the energy a new direction.
As all aspects of the self are connected as one, when healing happens on one level all other levels are affected. This is why Lomi Lomi is not just a physical treatment but works to restore harmony on a mental, emotional and spiritual level as well..
Lomi Lomi is an intuitive treatment so there is no set sequence of movements therefore no two massages will be the same. It begins with a quiet request for guidance and the setting of an intention for whatever healing is needed during the massage to take place.
As the “dance of life of breath from the heart” softly begins the practitioner uses forearms and hands over the body in wave after wave of movement building up into a deep dynamic rhythm. As different areas are worked simultaneously this dynamic rhythm gives overwhelming sensation so that it is almost impossible for the mind to focus on different areas at once and therefore surrenders into a deep relaxation. Gentle joint rotations and gentle stretches can be incorporated to assist the free flow of energy through the body. The ‘dance’ with which the practitioner moves around the table, combined with breathing techniques, helps to keep the energy level high and enhances the flow.
The massage closes with the client being gently eased back into their surroundings and a blessing is given. Having been cleansed by wave upon wave of loving touch it results in a sense of wholeness and peace.
